When The Goin’ Gets Tough

revolutionary-warI have been working and donating quite a bit (from my shoestring budget) to my favorite candidate, Bernie Sanders.  I feel deeply that he may be the last chance we have to engage an oligarchy that refuses to listen to any of us that aren’t super rich. It may be our last chance to have a voice in how our country is run, what food we eat, how clean our air is going to be, or our water, how the most vulnerable of us live, how much justice each of us might get.  It might even be the last chance that we have a say in saving our planet if it already isn’t too late for that.  I have serious reservations if people really know what is at stake here.  It may be the last chance for us to say what is best for us instead of gently being led to the next round of exploitation by people that will tell us where to go, how to think, what to embrace, or when we have to gear up for war.

I feel stung and betrayed by a system that is running rough shod over the country and that so many do not see.  I look around and wonder how many just go vote and really have no clue what is going on around us, other than their pay check isn’t getting any bigger.  What is happening to our world?  Do people know that we are being lied to on a grand scale?  The millennial generation is figuring out what is happening.

I remember real journalists like Walter Cronkite, Chet Huntley and David Brinkley, Tom Brokaw, and Peter Jennings.  Back then, we all were glued to the news and we, as Americans, believed what was being said.  There was an hour of news and we got real facts, as far as the newscasters were able to uncover it.  Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein were journalists that even shed light on one of the biggest scandals to hit the news waves when they dug into the Watergate debacle.  That was real.  No spin, no payoffs, no palm greasing, no corporate bosses to please, real news and we believed it.  It was their job not to lie to us.

Today, we have 24/7 fear mongering on all stations.  “If it bleeds, it leads” kind of mentality and if the reality show that passes for news isn’t quite there, subjective commentary is called for.  It doesn’t have to be factual, it just has to be sensational and bring in ratings.  If you have ever watched the show on HBO called “The Newsroom”, you get a glimpse into what news is today.  I realize this show is fiction, but then so is much of our current “news”.

If you are getting news outside of mainstream media, you may actually be able to understand what is being played out in front of our eyes.  Players are “picked” by the establishment.  It doesn’t matter what political party because they are all batting for the same team.  Corporations, that are now considered people due to the enactment of Citizens United, can buy our political system and determine what is best for them.  The message, “Do not deviate from establishment or we will crush you.”

Are we so different than the revolutionaries back at the birth of our country attempting to wrestle freedom away from England?  The rebels had a lot at stake.  Their very lives were at stake.  They weathered hunger, cold, lack of munitions, and a lack of warm clothing.  I’m sure on more than one occasion, it looked too bleak to pursue, but pursue they did and with the odds against them, they won liberty for our country.  We became the United States of America.

After the Nevada caucus, I felt bruised, but I also understood something.  Fighting for freedom is not for the faint at heart.  It requires real commitment, struggle, and staying power.  It requires looking huge power straight in the face and still putting on your armor and picking up your sword.  I refuse to lay down my sword.  I am praying that you don’t lay yours down.  I know George Washington didn’t during the harsh winter of 1777-1778.  He fought on as only the brave do.

Now, that is what we must do.  Revolution is never easy and this has been a rough battle when everything in power is against us, but we must end the greed, corruption, and those that are taking over our country while we sleep.  You may not agree with every issue Bernie stands for.  He has never claimed to be the answer to everyone’s issues, but what he has asked us to do, is to first fight to get our country back first.  Having a government that is answering to the people first instead of big money, is the only way ANY issue is going to get solved from the Congress, to the Senate, to the Presidency.

So the mainstream establishment can say that this can’t be done or that can’t be done.  It’s a way to pacify the masses, because they are making money off of us.  It’s in their best interest to keep us all sleeping, but people are beginning to wake up and Washington didn’t free the country by himself.  Though tattered and hungry, he had an army and what the mainstream establishment propaganda doesn’t realize still, is that we have one, too.  Go on, you know you want to.  Feel the Bern.

Wow! That is so beautifully written. It’s like you live in my head. It’s everything I think and feel. I could never express it all in such a way as that though. I live in Alabama and was born in Mississippi. Yep, probably the two most backwards states in the union. As you can imagine, being a hard core liberal, sometimes it feels like it’s me against the world. There are a few of us down here, though, and I’m finding more and more as the younger generations are coming up. It’s extremely hard to find like-minded individuals my age… Read more »
