Entrepreneur Homework 1: Protecting Your Ideas

I write about innovation & entrepreneurship in the field of education. That is my passion. The ProgressiveArmy.com has kindly given me an excellent platform to pursue my calling & be a champion, of sorts.

We are going to do a series called Entrepreneur Homework. We will initially touch on four areas over the coming weeks- Protecting Your Ideas, Disruptive Innovation, Idea Development and Franchising/Licensing.

Because innovation can & should come from any and everywhere, it’s important for people of all stripes to have a fair shot. For that reason, we will start with protecting your ideas. If you are like me, ideas are part of life. Each day brings a new one–if not several new ones. But, if we are honest, very few are worthy of protection. That one idea that keeps you up at night, and the “One” that all other ideas spring from, that may be the ONE worth protecting.

There are several ways to protect these ideas. The American legal system provides four basic solutions:

  • Patents
  • Trademarks
  • Copyrights
  • Trade Secrets

Below you will find a basic explanation of each. By no means is this an answer to all your “idea protection” prayers. This is just a start. Do your research and seek professional legal help when you are ready.
