Brace for MPACT
In politics, it is said that there is no such thing as an off-year. Unfortunately, on the American Left, we have failed to live up to that creed. We often find ourselves getting involved every four years or in two-year intervals, at best. MPACT (Member Policy and Campaign Teams) is seeking to change that in a big way, across the country.
MPACT is a nationwide nonprofit that will support year-round, issue-based local and national organizing efforts across the socio-economic spectrum — from underserved populations of color, to all low-income rural, suburban and exurban communities.
Three of the brightest stars from the 2016 Race for the White House are joining forces to create a vehicle for national political activism. Former State Sen. Nina Turner (D-Cleveland), Dr. Cornel West, and Activist/Entertainer Killer Mike, along with Bernie Sanders campaign staffers bring their prodigious talents to bear for the greater good. Senator Turner, Dr. West, and Killer Mike span three generations of activism and politics. They may be the best examples of American Prophetic Fire in public life today. With the exception of the remarkable voice-of-the-voiceless Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II of North Carolina. It is all but assured that Rev. Barber will be involved in North Carolina, in this writer’s humble opinion.
Empowering the American People
Make no mistake: This is a powerful trio and their influence is much greater than anyone in the establishment understands or will admit. Each brings a different perspective. Yet, the goal is the same – uniting the grassroots in a way that leads to progress for all Americans.
“We felt that an organization like MPACT was necessary, because there’s really no such thing as an off-year when it comes to elections,” Sen. Turner said. “Our communities need to be actively engaged in conversations and education efforts year-round. That’s just not happening in the current political climate. We plan on engaging all communities around the country on issues that begin at the local level, so local people can roll their sleeves up and do the work. We are no longer going to wait for candidates to come in and engage with these communities about the issues and what they stand for in the sprint to Election Day. MPACT and its allies will be a vehicle to keep communities consistently engaged.”
The State of Play
We are allowing the “alt-right” to ascend to power in this nation. This is because the powers-that-be have done their best to marginalize the voices on the Left. MPACT is going to change that. Lifting the voices of morality and fairness to heal our broken political system.
“Over the past several years we have seen a rising movement in this country of people saying ‘enough is enough’ and taking action,” said Dr. West. “Regardless of whether elite politicians are willing to put the needs of the people before special interests, we must take the reins and lead at all levels of the political process. The founders of MPACT came together and developed a plan to engage our communities across multiple platforms to resist the systemic pressures placed upon us.”
All people deserve a voice. That is the essence of democracy. We must fight to keep that spirit alive in our nation. This will take education and organization. This is activism.
“We have to educate and organize our own communities to create real power,” said Killer Mike. “Just as we have to invest in our own communities to build economic power, organizing on local issues is the key to national success within our neighborhoods. MPACT is here to make sure we do this year in and year out.”
What Tomorrow Holds
The fight is just – the battle is for the soul of our imperfect nation. Will we serve the few at the expense of the many or will we have justice in our lifetimes? Will we leave a healing nation and planet to our children and grandchildren? This is what is at stake. Everything.
