Young Adults Charged with Hate Crime After Kidnapping, Torturing White Disabled Man

Washington Post – Four young black adults were charged with hate crimes on Thursday, among other charges, after kidnapping a young white man that authorities say is mentally handicapped. The assailants tied the man up and beat him, made him drink toilet water, and even cut his scalp. They yelled “F— Donald Trump!” and “F— white people!” at times while streaming their activities on Facebook Live.

The victim knew one of the assailants and apparently went with them voluntarily at first. It is unclear what prompted the escalation, but the victim went to the hospital for treatment after he was found and is now with his family.

Six More States Are Anticipated to Pursue “Bathroom Bills” this Year

Time – North Carolina’s HB2 law sparked much controversy this year, quickly earning the nickname of the “bathroom bill,” even though that aspect of the law was only a tiny part of it. Many celebrities and businesses have boycotted the state as a result of the law. However, despite the controversy and protests, it seems like six more states might be pursuing variants of the law this year: Alabama, Missouri, South Carolina, Virginia, Texas, and Washington. The bills have already been filed in each state, although the language varies.

GOP Seeks to Strip Planned Parenthood of Federal Funding, Again

CNN – As part of the process to repeal the Affordable Care Act, Paul Ryan announced on Thursday that the Republicans would be trying to remove all federal funding from Planned Parenthood. The GOP has been trying to do this for some time, with renewed calls to defund the organization after faked videos were released that depicted Planned Parenthood employees talking about selling fetus tissue. Planned Parenthood has been cleared of any wrongdoing, but Republicans have used the videos to spur increased attempts to defund it.

The desire to strip Planned Parenthood of funding stems from its abortion services, despite the fact that the Hyde amendment prevents federal funding from being used for abortions. Additionally, abortions comprised only 3% of all services performed at Planned Parenthood in 2013.
