A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away it took a brave group, the Rebel Alliance, to stand up to an Evil Empire that took control from the people using fear and manipulation. We in the United States right now are facing a similar crisis. We have an evil entity, trying to acquire all the power he can…. And we do not have to call him Mr. President.
As much as it pains me to say this, the current president of the greatest country the world has ever known is a lazy, short-tempered narcissist with the attention span of an 8-year-old. Who, it seems, would rather be watching Morning Joe or anything Fox News puts out than go to meetings or briefings, and has even reportedly asked if in briefings he can have “as little as possible.”
This is not to say that President Trump is incompetent. Trump most certainly has a plan of action for how he would like to run his administration. We are already seeing it: the wall, the immigration ban, the beginning of the repeal of Obamacare, and many more of the campaign promises he made. But when it comes to the day-to-day tasks of running the government of the United States of America, President Trump seems like he’d rather get into fights with celebrities on twitter or complain about any number of media outlets that are treating him unfairly than get into the weeds and do the real work.
This is when the group he assembles in his White House will be most important. These characters he has assembled will have the ear of the President of the United States every day and night for the next four years.
First, we have a handful of baby Trumps: Ivanka, Eric, and Darth Donald Trump Jr. We can expect that Ivanka will play an important part in trying to keep her father sane and again try to make women see a side to him that does not make them want to take to the streets by the millions.
Jared Kushner could almost be thrown into the group with the baby Trumps, but I believe as a semi-outsider Trump will value Kushner, who could be a voice of reason in the future. Fingers crossed.
Another key member of the Trump White House is Boba Fett…. I mean Kellyanne Conway. Conway was Trump’s campaign manager and actually broke the glass ceiling, becoming the first woman to ever run a winning presidential campaign. As ironic as the Trump campaign breaking any glass ceilings for women may be, that is an amazing achievement that should not be overlooked. She continues to be one of Trump’s strongest advocates and will continue to beautifully try to defend him while making up new definitions for lies every interview.
There is also Sean Spicer who, like most press secretaries, gets thrown out to get yelled at and give the little information they are handed.
Next, we have Stephen Miller. Miller, a chief strategist, has already been called out on one of our president’s favorite programs, Morning Joe. Joe Scarborough, host of the morning talk show, singled out Mr. Miller for pushing the immigrant and refugee ban without informing proper agencies. He is also the author of Trump’s acceptance speech during the RNC convention in Cleveland as well as Trump’s inauguration speech, with such gloomy phrases as “American Carnage.”
Reince Priebus is the Chief of Staff to the President of the United States. Priebus is close with Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and will aim to work together to try to pass legislation a normal administration would.
This leaves us with the real reason I sat down to write this, the Darth Sidious to Trump’s Darth Vader: Steve Bannon, who is quoted as saying “darkness is good” and stating that Darth Vader, Dick Cheney, and Satan were good examples of the type of power he would like to possess. Bannon has been accused of being antisemitic by his ex-wife in a custody battle. In an interview, Bannon called the media the “opposition party” and said they should “shut up” because they do not know the American people. Steve Bannon was called THE most dangerous political operative in a column on October 8th, 2015 in Bloomberg and it seems that he has succeeded in his political goals, or at least is on his way.
Before joining the Trump campaign, Bannon ran Breitbart, a “news” organization that can best be described as a right-wing propaganda site masquerading as news. Under Bannon, Breitbart turned into a home for the alt-right (hipster nazis, but nazis nonetheless). Bannon is a right-wing, economic populous who is aligning himself with other right-wing populist leaders in Europe, within the Brexiters in the UK, in Marine Le Pen of France, Viktor Orbán of Hungary, and, of course, Vladimir Putin, who has been working to move EU governments to become more right-wing, anti-EU, like Orban’s, and more nationalist using tricks like fake news. All of these national parties have certain aspects in common but the one defining theme is anti-immigrant, more specifically anti-Muslim immigrant, most specifically anti-refugee. Many close to Bannon believe that he now wants to “flood the zone“ in the beginning of the administration.
This is the issue that Americans should take note of: President Trump has “updated” the U.S. National Security Council, downgrading the military chiefs of staff and giving a permanent position to Mr. Bannon. Bannon is consolidating power at the top, becoming Trump’s go-to on both issues foreign and domestic. The use of executive orders by President Trump also breaks a record for the most executive orders in a single month signed during a president’s first week in office.
Mr. Bannon likes to use Star Wars references, so let’s join him in doing so. In a Trump White House, we, as progressives and liberals, see the evil Empire. This massive entity that has unlimited power and reaches across the known world. The Empire was once a Republic that was taken down from the inside after others had caved in fear. They were deceived and fear-mongered into handing power over. Trump is our orange Darth Vader and Bannon a mix between Emperor Palpatine and Jabba the Hutt.
But we are the Resistance and right now there is a Rebel Alliance getting ready to take down this evil Empire. Just like in the movie, Vader and the evil Empire with him will lose, because we are America, not the evil Empire. We are the shining city on the hill. We are the land of the free and the home of the brave. To those who may doubt the greatness of the American dream and the American spirit, I say we are a nation who, when refugees are denied access to enter our borders, we spontaneously, by the thousands, protested at our airports screaming, “let them in!”
No matter what executive order President Trump signs, I take my cue from Lady Liberty herself. At the foot of the Statue of Liberty a poem “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus, reads:
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
