Amidst the controversy surrounding the election of Donald Trump to the Presidency of the United States of America, there continues to be increasing calls by the public, state government officials, congressmen, and senators to have the matter heard and addressed related to his involvement in Russian hacking and influence campaign in the 2016 Presidential election. Meanwhile, Trump has worked quickly to keep his campaign promises, increasing profits for corporations, and instituting policies which have served to cause great division within the country. It does not help that Trump has defended Putin’s actions recently. In fact, many Republicans have joined the chorus of Democrats and denounced his stance on Russia – which some feel lends credence to the theory that Trump has ulterior motives in defending the country’s actions.
Despite Trump’s activity since becoming President, a group of several women has persisted in their case against him. Plaintiffs are Nancy Goodman, Diane Blumstein, and Donna Soodalter-Toman. The Supreme Court case centers on the question of the ultimate legitimacy of the election. Plaintiffs claim that if the election was tainted by a foreign influence that it must be declared null and void. After the inauguration, the action was assigned a new case number, which has been placed on the docket with a disposition date of February 21, 2017, for the next step in the case where the government can respond in defense of the case. Interestingly enough, the case has been brought to the court with no attorney representing the plaintiffs.
If the case is ruled in favor of plaintiffs, it would mean that the election could be ruled invalid and a revote could occur. If there is to be a revote, there should be a way to adequately secure the election process from further hacking. One of the ways could be using open source voting machines and systems as advocated by the National Association of Voting Officials since there are so many vulnerabilities laden within current voting system software. Another, but more difficult to manage, method would be a hand count. Remember that election hacking into voting systems is likely one of the ways that the election became compromised. With all the controversy surrounding the election, there is no doubt that we need a revote in order to represent the will of the people. Lawmakers are already stepping forward to support the cause.
