Last Stand: Water Protectors Return As Drilling Set To Begin

The Guardian – On Wednesday, the army corps formally granted Dakota Access the final permit it requires to drill under the Missouri river. “We plan to begin drilling immediately,” a spokeswoman for the company said.

Huddled inside tents, tipis and other shelters scattered throughout camps near the construction site, indigenous and environmental activists on Wednesday said they would not give up their battle despite the government’s aggressive efforts to greenlight construction.

“This is the most important time to be here,” said Laura Hinman, a 24-year-old member of the Kumeyaay tribe, who has been at Standing Rock for months.

Federal authorities have worked quickly to follow through with the executive memorandum Donald Trump signed during his first week in office, which called for expedited approvals of the Dakota Access and Keystone XL oil pipelines.

SCOTUS Pick Neill Gorsuch Calls Trumps Comments Demoralizing and Disheartening

ABCDonald Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court, Neil Gorsuch, called the president’s comments on the judiciary “demoralizing” and “disheartening” during a meeting with Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., a spokesman for Gorsuch confirmed. The spokesman did not say which of Trump’s comments Gorsuch was referring to.

Trump has spoken out multiple times against a federal judge who blocked his immigration order in Washington state last week. Over the weekend, he panned Judge James Robart as a “so-called judge” and blamed him for risking national security by issuing the temporary restraining order (which applied nationwide), calling it “a terrible decision.”

Protests Erupt Over Phoenix Mother’s Arrest After Immigration Check

KTAR News – Protesters gathered at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement headquarters in Phoenix on Wednesday night, after a Phoenix woman was allegedly taken into custody by federal officials following a routine immigration check.

The Los Angeles Times reported Guadalupe Garcia de Rayos, 36, was taken into custody by ICE officials Wednesday morning after participating in her mandatory check-in.

The arrest sparked a large protest at the department’s field office in Phoenix, leading protesters to huddle around an ICE van that Garcia was placed in and chant phrases like, “Shame on you!” to prevent her deportation.

Sean Spicer Demands Apology From McCain and Critics of Yemen Raid

CNN – White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Wednesday that critics of the recent raid in Yemen, including Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain, should apologize.Spicer was asked at a White House briefing about criticism of the raid, including comments by McCain, who said he could not describe the operation as a “success” earlier in the day. Nancy Pelosi to Press: ‘Donald Trump is ‘Coming After You’

Huffington Post – House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) says the press has a key role in holding President Donald Trump accountable in the years to come.

Kicking off the annual House Democratic retreat at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor on Wednesday, Pelosi vowed that her party would fight Trump’s administration tooth and nail. But she warned that journalists also needed to be ready to hold his feet to the fire.

Pelosi said that Trump and his administration shared “characteristics of an authoritarian regime,” citing the president’s appetite for secrecy and repeated attacks against friends and foes alike.
