The extent of the neoliberal arguments about race in America has become so unbearably reductive and childish. All of it boils down to making White people be “nice to us.” Devoid of economic context, race means absolutely nothing beyond personal/group identity.
Race was, as a social construct, designed to enable colonization and slavery. All of this was for ECONOMIC gain. Now, Black people that I used to think were smart are out here telling me economics have nothing to do with race. It is painfully stupid, and they should stop. It won’t because their paymasters (Yes, that is the word I intended to use) want us to disconnect race from finance.
I am a grown ass man. If me and mine have equal protection under the law and opportunity based on our ability and potential, I do not care what anyone thinks about me. Race is only important in the way it impacts policy and practice.
Black people are poor, incarcerated, and unemployed at astronomical rates because of policy, not someone’s feelings about my skin color. It’s far beyond time for us to grow up in this regard. This is all a ploy to keep Black people from staking our financial claim in the most powerful country in the world. When that conversation is taken seriously, the rich and powerful have a serious problem.
Guess what? Americans, by and large, know and understand this. Even White people. Many have no issue with programs that are designed to make up for our economic and social disadvantages that stem from slavery and the systems that followed. They won’t act on it because we are not forcing an adult conversation.
When you say race and economics are not linked, the rich and powerful laugh at you. They should. We all should. That is the proper response to, what everyone with any sense knows, is a joke. But, our greatest leaders are weeping.
This is from an article I wrote last year. It spells out what all these people learned: We need economic redress for our grievances. Period. Full stop. Anything short of that is a crime against humanity.
You Are Being Used
But, you still hear the same dunces on twitter and elsewhere telling you otherwise. If you did a Venn Diagram of these people, you would find, without fail, that they are a Clinton supporter or a Bernie hater. Bernie is trying to make Black people’s lives safer and more financially secure with sound policy prescriptions. #TeamClinton? Not so much. I won’t even go into the Clinton legislative history. It is atrocious.
All of this White Noise (ironically) is designed to freeze the conversation on improving the lives of non-rich Americans generally and Poor People of Color specifically. You are ON THE WRONG SIDE! Stop hating Bernie and look at his policy.
More importantly, stop listening to these vapid arguments about race and economics. No matter who is saying it. These people are not your friends. They are literally an enemy to the well-being of the entire African-American community.
