Dick Gregory was our elder-statesman– the person endowed with so much knowledge and lifetimes of experience that even the most ambitious and talented leaders of today knew that if Gregory was present, we’d be wise to sit silently and absorb all that we could whenever he spoke.
It’s arguable that the only thing more powerful than Gregory’s wisdom and experience was his voice and his way with words. He had the ability to make the mightiest of men tremble with the sharpness of his tongue and the quickness of his wit — even in his later years.
Today we celebrate the life and mourn the passing of our elder-statesman who was the perfect bridge to connect the generations from Malcolm, Martin and Baldwin to #BlackLivesMatter, Millennials and beyond. He was simultaneously a legend who stood side-by-side with Civil Rights leader and yet he was contemporaneous and relevant even unto the day of his passing.
We can only hope to age with as much grace, dignity and POWER as that embodied in our elder-statesman, Dick Gregory; gone from us now – but whose memory will forever serve as a torch that lights the path of every generation of liberators to come. Rest in Power, Brother Gregory.
