Welcome to the Live Coverage of the November 7 elections. Polls are closing in Virginia and in many across the United States.

Kurt Hackbarth Kurt Hackbarth November 7, 20178:15 pm

Looking forward to joining everyone tonight. All eyes will be on the gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey, of course, but there are a lot of local races that merit close attention.

Anoa Changa Anoa Changa November 7, 20178:17 pm

Hey i’m here yay!!!

Anoa Changa Anoa Changa November 7, 20178:20 pm

Mondale should be joining us soon. He just got an update that voter turnout around Alexandria was up.

Waiting to see what is happening in New York. Obviously, many of us are rooting for Jabari! My other hot pick is Brian Cunningham. There have been accusations of electioneering against the incumbent Brian is running against.

Kurt Hackbarth Kurt Hackbarth November 7, 20178:24 pm

High voter turnout in northern Virginia will be good news, of course, for Democrat Ralph Northam. Whether progressives have cause to cheer, however, is another matter. Northam has admitted to voting twice for George W. Bush, has flirted with switching parties, and in 2011, described health care as a “privilege.”

Anoa Changa Anoa Changa November 7, 20178:24 pm

Hate to burst bubbles but Vincent Fort is not winning Atlanta…

Anoa Changa Anoa Changa November 7, 20178:25 pm

Yeah khackbarth turnout will certainly be in spite of him, and because of the massive efforts to turn out POC voters.

Anoa Changa Anoa Changa November 7, 20178:28 pm

so far 4% reporting in VA, Gillespie with a slight lead 50.4% to 48.6 for Northam. Hyra…lol i thought that said Hydra!

Kurt Hackbarth Kurt Hackbarth November 7, 20178:30 pm

Agreed on turnout being in spite, not because of Northam. If folks haven’t read it yet, drchanga published an insightful piece on his recent statements on sanctuary cities and DFA’s reaction to that: http://progressivearmy.com/2017/11/03/dfa-takes-stand-in-virginia-governors-race/

Kurt Hackbarth Kurt Hackbarth November 7, 20178:35 pm

Gillespie’s slight lead in Virginia can be seen as very much within the norm, as smaller communities in the center and south of the state tend to report first, with larger DC suburbs, which tend Democratic, reporting later. That said, the fact that this race is this close is troubling. Trump’s approval rating is at historic lows for a president after his first year, and the Clinton won the state by 5% in 2016. If the Democrats were to manage to blow it here, it would be epic.

Salam Morcos Salam Morcos November 7, 20178:37 pm

Gillespie seems to have increased his lead in Virginia’s gubernatorial race, with a 47% to 37% lead with 10% reporting.

Kurt Hackbarth Kurt Hackbarth November 7, 20178:37 pm

…But not entirely surprising. The Democrats are at record lows of unpopularity themselves, and continue to nominate neoliberal candidates like Northam, despite having lost over 1,000 seats in the past decade.

Anoa Changa Anoa Changa November 7, 20178:40 pm

Just checking in here in Atlanta. Polls close at 8pm.

Salam Morcos Salam Morcos November 7, 20178:40 pm

But losing despite of Trump’s unprecedented unpopularity would be an utter embarrassment. Let’s hope that the numbers change quickly.

Kurt Hackbarth Kurt Hackbarth November 7, 20178:46 pm

Meanwhile, in New Jersey, the Democrats, almost in a caricature of themselves, have nominated former Goldman Sachs executive Phil Murphy to face off against Republican Kim Guadagno. Murphy, who spent $15 million of his own fortune to win the primary, is expected to win, primarily because Chris Christie’s approval rating is 15%. In essence, any Democrat – with the exception of Hillary Clinton – should be able to win here.

Anoa Changa Anoa Changa November 7, 20178:47 pm
Salam Morcos Salam Morcos November 7, 20178:49 pm

We will also be closely following the ballot initiative to expand Medicaid in Maine. Governor LePage has blocked Medicaid expansion multiple times. Expanding Medicaid would give about 80,000 people access to healthcare.

Salam Morcos Salam Morcos November 7, 20178:56 pm

What a shift in Virginia’s race. Northam now holds the lead over Gillespee by 2.9% with 36% of the votes counted.

Kurt Hackbarth Kurt Hackbarth November 7, 20178:58 pm

A genuine positive in Virginia (as a progressive, I’m struggling to find some positives here) has been Governor McAuliffe’s program for restoring civil and voting rights to ex-felons. Northam has promised to continue that program. https://commonwealth.virginia.gov/judicial-system/restoration-of-rights/

Mondale Robinson Mondale Robinson November 7, 20178:59 pm

40%of the vote in and we Fairfax (Lt. Gov) is holding strong with 50.22% of the vote

Kurt Hackbarth Kurt Hackbarth November 7, 20179:00 pm

Drinking game idea: every time someone on CNN mentions “vote-rich” counties in northern Virginia, reach for your brew of choice.

Mondale Robinson Mondale Robinson November 7, 20179:01 pm

What’s interesting is the fact that Republican candidate for Lt. Gov is out performing Republican candidate for Gov. but that’s not the case on the Dem side…I’m wondering if that has anything to do with the racist tactics associated with Northam’s campaign

Kurt Hackbarth Kurt Hackbarth November 7, 20179:02 pm

CNN projects Democrat Phil Murphy will win the governor’s race in New Jersey. Not a big surprise.

Mondale Robinson Mondale Robinson November 7, 20179:06 pm

Re: Phil Murphy, it is not a surprise, however really wish the Democrats would get brave, especially in states like NJ and not put forth such corporate Dems.

And speaking of socialists, another interesting race to watch is Ginger Jentzen, the Socialist Alternative candidate for Ward 3 of the Minneapolis City Council. Jentzen has run a strong race, leading to both Democrats and Republicans ganging up against her:

MSNBC projects Northam as the winner of virgina‘s gubernatorial race

Kurt Hackbarth Kurt Hackbarth November 7, 20179:19 pm

CNN has also called the race for Northam. Progressives in Virginia now have their work cut out for them to hold his feet to the fire on expanding Medicaid, public education funding, and free tuition for community college or trade school, while fighting him on areas where he strayed unnecessarily rightwards during the campaign.

Anoa Changa Anoa Changa November 7, 20179:20 pm
Kurt Hackbarth Kurt Hackbarth November 7, 20179:21 pm

CNN is already spinning Northam’s win as a call for Democrats to nominate more centrists. Drink.

Mondale Robinson Mondale Robinson November 7, 20179:22 pm

Northam’s win is a victory in spite of not because of. He won a seat that should have been a easy race for Democrats but it was a hard fight. This is true because Democrats continue to put forth lackluster candidates

Kurt Hackbarth Kurt Hackbarth November 7, 20179:23 pm

What Mondale said!

Anoa Changa Anoa Changa November 7, 20179:25 pm

@mondale how are the other DFA candidates doing?

Kurt Hackbarth Kurt Hackbarth November 7, 20179:27 pm

Another very interesting race, as Anoa mentioned earlier, is Jabari Brisport, the Green Party candidate for New York City council. Jabari has run on a platform including affordable housing, criminal justice reform including closing the infamous Riker’s prisons, and economic justice including a surtax on high CEO pay. And, of course, the Green Party’s Green New Deal. http://www.jabari2017.nyc/

Kurt Hackbarth Kurt Hackbarth November 7, 20179:38 pm

The CNN spin line, now being repeated over and over, is exactly why tonight was always going to be tough for progressives. If the GOP won New Jersey or Virginia, it would strengthen Trumpism. If the Democrats won in two states that obviously should win in, the party will use it as a club to beat Sanders supporters with. “You see, we can only win with moderates!” Thus ensuring that the Democrats learn precisely nothing from the last several years and continue their autopilot glide into irrelevance.

Kurt Hackbarth Kurt Hackbarth November 7, 20179:38 pm

And speaking of socialists, another interesting race to watch is Ginger Jentzen, the Socialist Alternative candidate for Ward 3 of the Minneapolis City Council. Jentzen has run a strong race, leading to both Democrats and Republicans ganging up against her:

Democrats are taking the wrong message from tonight, and really this entire past week. Drop the games, and turn out the people!

Kurt Hackbarth Kurt Hackbarth November 7, 201710:13 pm

The sweep of such a diverse slate of Democrats to the Virginia House of Delegates is particularly sweet considering the Charlottesville Neo-Nazi rally happened three short months ago.

Salam Morcos Salam Morcos November 7, 201710:15 pm

Democrats flipped 10 seats, leading in 4 other seats that were held by republicans, and it’s a toss up in 5 districts. This is a blow out.

And no seats were lost to Republicans. In an off year, this is very impressive. If this trend continues, it will be a bloodbath for Republicans in 2018.

Mondale Robinson Mondale Robinson November 7, 201710:16 pm

The Democrats needed black vote to be higher than normal to win and guess what? The Black vote was higher!!! The democrats weren’t talking to sporadic voters they chose ads on Fox News? So who was talking to black and brown sporadic voters?

In New York City, Bill De Blasio is crusing to re-election with a 66% to 28% lead over Nicole Malliotakis with 16% reporting. Now maybe he can get to work restoring the 130,000 people who were shaved off the voting rolls in Brooklyn in the 2016 Democratic primary.
