Originally, this article was going to be a “rah rah”, pom-pom shaking rant about how Bernie can sweep Super Tuesday and slay Team Hillary singlehandedly. Then I remembered that I can read & count. We knew this was going to be a tough day. It’s better that I use my words to heal some Super Tuesday wounds & help get us back in the game. First, let’s recap:
Texas: It’s Texas.
Vermont: Hometeam! Yes!
Virginia: Clawd Ha’ Mercy…
With that out of the way; we can move on to dusting ourselves off. As Progressives, we have to be wed to reality with an eye to a better future. That is our cross to bear. We see the possibilities of a White House without Wall Street. Cabinet appointments with names like
Warren, Sachs, Reich, Jones & [add your favorite Progressive]. A country where our voice matters. Where we can crack the wall of Big Money & Big Business in government. We will keep going.
Politics of lofty aspirations is where the country is headed. The establishment is going to be pulled along kicking and screaming. Young people do not subscribe to political cowardice disguised as “pragmatism.” No stomach for the old ways of “we will see.” Do not dismiss this as an unwillingness to compromise. They want nothing less than a reframing of what government can, should & will do. They seek FDR-type reforms. The Laffer Curve and fainting couch discussions about debt/deficit are a relic of wrongheaded past. Broader and stronger safety net, labor protections, big money out of politics among, infrastructure & education spending. They are also ready to pay higher taxes for the net social gains. In other words, they are logical & informed.
Final Super Tuesday 2016 reality check: We have completed 17 out of 50 states. That is 1218 out of 4764 available delegates. A whopping 26% of delegates. The first quarter has just ended.
