Bernie is building the dangerous coalition that the rich and powerful have always feared. As a Black person in America, few things are guaranteed. Only two things actually. As the saying goes- “All I HAVE to do is stay Black & die.” Coming in a close third is knowing that poor and working class Whites have no interest in the betterment of my community. The economy is a Zero Sum game to the majority. Our gain was always perceived as their loss. Not realizing that our fiscal fates were linked. Or worse, not caring. Our presence in this country as a source of cheap or free labor necessarily places downward pressure on the wage floor. This impacts everyone in the labor market. Especially, less well-off Whites. We hold it as fact, like the sun rising in the morning, that White America will accept any state of affairs as long a people of color get less. This is the stuff the Republican base is built from. This is still the way of things.
I must admit that I am Feeling the Bern. As a Progressive, I could not turn away from the clarion call of fairness & good governance. I left the Clinton Machine and joined Team Bernie. Great policy prescriptions from a nearly incorruptible, confirmed truth teller. Yes, please.
Then the unthinkable happened. I saw working class White people signing up for the same ride. That ride included higher taxes, universal healthcare and free college- for EVERYONE. Bernie is completely clear on his positions concerning race, inequality, police brutality, etc. No one is here without knowledge of the full picture. Usually, the presence of poor & working class Whites was a sure sign that we are largely unwelcome. Much like the Tea Party and current Trump rallies. We always know when we are not wanted. Our survival & freedom has always depended on it.
Now Whites, Hispanics, Democrats, Independents, Blacks, Muslims, Christians, Native Americans, Asians, even grumpy ass Republicans are getting on board the Bernie Train. Decades of lies & voodoo economics are wearing off on the right. The left is tired of mealy-mouthed incrementalism. It serves only to transfer all the power & resources to the top of the income ladder. They have no intention of letting anything trickle down. This coalition intends to change that.
