[WATCH] Standing Up to Fascism

Little Finger

Full Definition of fascism

  1. often capitalized:  a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition
  2. a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control <early instances of army fascism and brutality — J. W. Aldridge>

Let me say this from the outset: Violence has no place in our American democracy.

Now that that is out of the way, let’s discuss what happened in Chicago when Donald Trump wanted to hold a rally for his budding GOP, “strong” man political movement. Diverse groups including Black Lives Matter and Bernie Sanders supporters gave the nation a view of an American coalition that we have all been waiting for. The Vanguard of the Political Revolution. A multi-ethnic group that is ready to put themselves on the line to save our nation from itself- cape flapping in the breeze and all. These young people differ from movements of the past. They come in peace to exercise their First Amendment rights of free speech and to assemble peaceably. But, as the saying goes “don’t test them.” While a large contingent of this group-of-groups believes in MLK-style non-violence, some deeply believe in self-defense. Good luck to those probing to find out which is which. This is a come-as-you-are movement. As long as you are in it for progress-of-all and violence is not your first move, you are welcome. Only time will tell whether meeting violence with violence is the answer or even part of the answer. But it is absolutely on the menu, and when facing bullies, it may be necessary.

On the other side of this divide is the Trump cult of personality. Violence has been a fixture on the Trump campaign trail for some time. Rachel Maddow has broken down how the Donald has been promoting/inciting violence at his rallies for some time. This is unmistakeably a budding fascistic movement. People have to stand up and stand up RIGHT NOW. This thing cannot be allowed to grow unchecked. We tried that and it did not work. Win, lose or draw; we have to stand toe-to-toe with this monster that the Republican Party & Conservative Movement has built. They have used race, hatred & xenophobia to maintain power to the detriment to the entire nation for decades. What we are seeing is the natural outcome of such movements. We can look away no longer.

It’s also time to stand up in the voting booth, too. If you think Donald Trump cannot become President of the United States you don’t understand American society. In polls, Bernie Sanders beats Trump by a larger margin than Hillary Clinton. Vote however you will. But do your homework and know what is at stake.
