[WATCH] Black Girls Rock, Ms. Millie, and Respecting Space

Anoa Changa was kind enough to allow me to write about some of her videos here on ProgressiveArmy.com. She is fiery & brilliant, and I am honored to work with her.

One disclaimer, I am a card-carrying Feminist that is fresh out of remorse and apologies for those that don’t or refuse to get it. The amazing women in my life deserve no less. Especially, my Wife, my Mother, Daughters, Nieces, and Granddaughters. There will be missteps on my part as I try to keep up with Anoa. Please forgive me. I am determined to get better. The fight is too important.

We are going to talk about historical transgressions and respect for space. Starting with the former, the Clinton record on Black women is shaky at best. NAFTA destroyed the jobs that kept Black families living quality lives. Welfare reform drove poor and working poor Black women into low-wage jobs as welfare support ran out. Black and Brown women, their sons, brothers and fathers were killed and jailed by an openly unjust criminal justice system. CHIP is waved in front of us to ward off our arguments. It is a band-aid on an open, festering shotgun wound. Think of the efficiencies that could be leveraged if children were in stable homes with no food insecurity and decent jobs. In retrospect, I guess that Hillary and Bill knew our kids would need it.

Onto respecting space. Hillary took her show on the road to shore up her vote with Black women. She went Newark to crash the Black Girls Rock event. After seeing Bernie crush it in the Bronx and seeing her lead among minorities crumble, the former First Lady went looking for campaign props. Even with the Clinton record and current platform coming up short for Black women, she still showed up as if she were part of the community. This was a Black woman space to celebrating Blackness & womanhood. The presence of the most powerful White woman in the country was scene-stealing of the highest order. Luckily, you cannot stop the shine of a room full of Black women. Obviously, BGR could not turn away a former Secretary of State and Presidential candidate. This is no shade to that wonderful organization.

Watch as Ms. Changa breaks it down in the video below.
