Matt and Matty Week
This week was a media comedy of horrors. In a Trump-Clinton race for the White House, I guess it was inevitable. The absurdity reached epic levels. Joy Reid’s Twitter essay on Green Communism almost made the cut. But, the reaction to Matt Lauer’s Commander in Chief Forum and Matty Iglesias’ ode to opaque governance took the shared crown. Plus, I am a fan of alliteration. Well on to the fun…
Matty Iglesias
Matty dumped the final shreds of his credibility into the closest waste paper basket this week. His article titled “Against Transparency” (no link, because f*&k him) may be the worst article written this cycle. It was an obvious nod to Team Clinton that “Matty is your guy!”. If you need someone to write a logic-defying story on a prominent platform, he is only an encrypted message away.
I will not try to outdo Matt Taibbi’s epic take-down of the piece. Because he’s Matt Taibbi. What I will say is that a journalist calling for less transparency from a democratically elected government that is increasingly resistant to Freedom of Information Act requests is beyond ridiculous. It is downright dumb. The assumption that government functions better in darkness begs the question: “How would you know, Matty? How. Would. You. Know.”
Matt Lauer
First, let’s all take a deep breath. Raise your hand if you think Morning Show Matt is anything other than a media light weight. I’ll wait. He got his big shot and it didn’t work out. Folks on the right said he gave Hillary a pass. People on the left said he was way too kind to Herr Trump.
The forum could and should have been more about policy. The email issue is a real thing. Hillary’s conduct around the handling of classified information is an indicator of future behavior. The past is prologue and it matters. I could go on. But, I won’t.
