PROGRESSIVE ARMY NEWS
New York Police Sergeant Hugh Barry was arrested Wednesday, May 31, 2017, for the shooting death of Deborah Danner. Barry faces charges for second-degree murder, first and second-degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide according to an unnamed source at the NYPD.
This arrest follows months of investigation into the death of Danner, who was 66 years old at the time and suffered from schizophrenia. NY Mayor Bill DeBlasio and Police Commissioner James OʼNeill stated at the time that Barry had failed to follow the proper protocol for dealing with suspects with suspected mental health problems…
But it really doesn’t mean very much.
The Paris Climate deal was always more symbolic than practical and Trump’s pulling out of it can be described the same way.
As most people know, the Paris deal was non-binding — meaning that while it declared that the UN would really prefer, if it’s not too much trouble, that its member states reduce emissions, it had no way of making sure they actually did or sanctioning them if they chose not to. So whatever dirty, emissions-spewing, coal-industry-fellating, civilization-ending plan Trump and the Republicans…
Although there’s no proof Eleanor Roosevelt said it first, she did say it perfectly:
“Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.”
No other quote better defines today’s split within the Democratic Party. Lifelong lefties like me like to think we’re intellectually superior to the right., While there is some scientific evidence that this is historically true, the recent election cycle calls much of that into question. Unfortunately, cults of personality have emerged around people (Hillary Vs Bernie) and persist almost a year after the primary was decided.
I’ve had my share of battles. It’s always been about my strong and stubborn Progressive values but the opponent shifts with the people running for high office or those actually in power. After 9/11, the battle was for Peace, Civil Liberties, reversing trickle down economics, and curtailing the power of the Bush Administration as they ran amok through the Middle East and here in the USA with the passage of the Patriot Act, the opening of Guantanamo Bay…
Nigel Clarge – The Emperor’s Imperialist Pilgrimage
There is that moment when you ask a ‘right-wing’ friend or family member if they have been following a particular story in the news, and they reply, “Of course I have, I hate the f*#@in’ left!”
It is likely they are about to regale you with the grotesqueries of CNN, MSNBC, The Washington Post, The New York Times, and so on.
I have talked often in this space about the ongoing battle between the mainstream “left” and the ideological left (if we are forced to use the faulty left-right dichotomy).
Consider someone offering a criticism of the “left” – the one depicted in the mainstream narrative –while, at the same time, having a vague understanding that the progressives and socialists they occasionally come into contact with are also part of something called the left. What an incredibly effective diversionary tool; starting the participants of a conversation with an inherent misunderstanding of one another.
Correction: This piece previously attributed The Emperor’s Imperialist Pilgrimage to David Grossman. It has since been updated to reflect the correct author, Nigel Clarke.
