Hey Democrats: This is How You Win

Jon Ossoff lost his highly contested House race in Georgia against a Republican candidate who said that she did not support a living wage. How did this happen? The answer is simple: Ossoff did not give voters anything to vote for. Ossoff was undoubtedly better than his opponent Karen Handel in many ways, but not enough to win. I wasn’t expecting him to win, because he offered voters nothing to vote for. His campaign ran this ridiculous ad that showed him tweeting about being against government waste. I mean seriously, who was won over by that ad?

Jeremy Corbyn, on the other hand, gave people in the UK something to vote for. The Labour Party’s platform offered a strong stance on improving people’s lives. This is why the Tories lost their majority and the Labour Party saw their biggest gains since the forties. Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party’s victory and Ossoff’s loss in Georgia last month proves what we on the left have been trying to tell the Democratic Party for years now: if you give people something to vote for, then we will vote for you.

I have to be honest, I don’t see a lot of hope for the Democrats in the 2018 midterms or 2020. The Democrats have shown repeatedly that they’ve learned absolutely nothing from 2016 and they plan on making the same mistakes again in 2018, 2020, and beyond. The DNCC completely ignored a congressional race earlier this year in Kansas, which they could have easily won, had they tried. We saw the same thing in Montana when Paul Gianforte who literally assaulted a reporter, beat progressive Rob Quist in a race that he should have absolutely won. I know because I have tons of family in Montana who all voted for him. My own grandfather Bill Spoja Jr., a lawyer and rancher in the tiny central Montana town of Lewistown, was mentioned on Twitter by Buzzfeed reporter Anne Helen Peterson. Even my staunchly Democrat grandfather said that the Democrats made a “big mistake” by not listening to Bernie. The Democrats didn’t listen to Bernie, and they lost. They dumped an obscene amount of money into the Georgia race on another milquetoast neoliberal, and surprise surprise, they lost again.

What’s it going to take Democrats? How much are you willing to lose before you get the hint? The stickers you asked people to vote on tell me that you have nothing. Let me give you some advice. The electorate is sick of business as usual. Some of us are literally dying for change. All we hear about from the mainstream media is “Russia, Russia, Russia.” Most of us don’t care about Russia. We’re too busy lying in bed at night worrying about how we’re going to pay our rent and feed our families. We’re too worried about how we’re going to afford to go to the doctor to care about the latest stupid thing Trump said on Twitter. If you don’t start caring about what happens to us, we are not going to vote for you, as you should’ve already seen. We want affordable health care, but you don’t want us to have it, as a certain Democrat in California already showed us. Why should we vote for you?

Don’t get me wrong, the Republican party is bad. They’re worse than they’ve ever been before. The GOP has reached the point of being cartoonishly evil. You, the Democratic party helped them get there because you’ve ceased to be an opposition party. Mark Penn’s editorial in the New York Times is wrong. Your only hope, Democrats, is to take a sharp turn to the left. Reject your donors. I don’t mean pause your donations, as Corey Booker said he was going to do. Reject them altogether. We, the voters will take care of you, as you saw last year. Bernie’s records during last year’s primary should show you once and for all that you don’t need big donors. He came from nothing and won 46% of the delegates. If you give me something to vote for, I will vote for you again. The rest of us will too. If you want to win, all you need is this one simple trick: give us something to vote for and we will vote for you.
