Progressive Victories Across the Country

November 7th was a great day for anyone left of AG Jeff Sessions. The narrative of the evening broadly, was a rebuke of Trumpism. This outcome was a significant response to the rise of Right Wing nationalism that we are currently seeing in many countries. The other important takeaway from the evening was the first signs of a political resurgence of the Left.

New Jersey and Virginia governorships were important wins for Democrats. However, both Northam and Murphy are garden variety Neoliberals with no Progressive bonafides. The real story that is being glossed over, if not downright being denied in mainstream media, was the flurry of Progressive wins. Our Revolution, Democratic Socialists of America, Democracy for America and the Green Party all racked up numerous wins all over the map. These victories fly in the face of the conventional “wisdom” that says that you can’t win if you go too far left on policy. This thinking only really flies within the Beltway, CNN/MSNBC, and donor class circles. There is a good reason this trope never survives the first contact outside of this bubble- it’s dumb. Voter enthusiasm is a thing. It matters what policies candidates and parties support. If you want votes, you stand by the policy that voters want. Sometimes, politics can be that simple.

Our Revolution is lead by President Nina Turner, a vocal and strident Progressive. Her courage and compassion have earned the trust and support of the Left. Our Revolution-endorsed candidates running on the People’s Platform clocked twenty-one wins on Tuesday. This tally includes Lee Carter, unseating the GOP House of Delegates Whip in Virginia.

“Our Revolution’s candidates won in every part of America–blue and red, rural and urban.  What we saw last night is a preview of what is to come and what is possible when local groups stick to progressive values, identify progressive champions and advocate for an America that works for all. Our Revolution is building a bench of diverse progressive champions at all levels of government who can change their communities and grow the progressive movement.”

— President Nina Turner, Our Revolution

This statement is clarifying for many reasons. Not the least of which are that voters respond to policies that can impact their lives and the lives of their families. Politics are transactional. This doesn’t only apply to the donor class. For many of us on the left of the political and policy spectrum, this is a moment of vindication. We have stated that if people are given the opportunity to support Progressive legislation that is also fiscally sound, they will do so.

The Executive Director of the Progressive Independent Party, Araquel Bloss has a message for the candidates: “We thank and congratulate all the progressive candidates who ran their campaigns centered on the issues which impact the lives of average Americans. In a system rigged against ethical campaigns and progressive ideology, your bravery, and integrity is inspiring to all of us.”

Can’t really top that. So, I will leave it there.
